Primate Experimentation in the United States:
The University of Arizona
(Click here for downloadable 8-1/2 X 11 fact sheet PDF)

Cruelty and Waste on a National Scale

Primate experimentation in the United States is out of control. In the last ten years the number of primate experiments funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has increased by 136%. Statistics based on data published by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) reveal that primate experimentation in the U.S. has reached an all time high with over 120,000 of our closest relatives suffering and dying in laboratories during the last two years.

Repetition is rampant among NIH-funded projects. There are currently 151 NIH projects that study neural information processing in macaque monkeys. These experiments continue for decades wasting millions of tax dollars, and victimizing primates for an entire lifetime.

Primate Learning Experiments

Dr. Fraser Wilsons experimentation at the University of Arizona confines primates to restraint chairs, and requires them to perform behavioral tasks to obtain water. For five days of each week these monkeys receive water only during the experiment. This practice deprives them of water for as much as 19 hours each day.

Surgical procedures in this experimentation attach devices to the skulls of primates with steel screws, places electrodes into their brains, and wire coils near their eyes.

The life of one Primate

At the University of Arizona a 5-year-old male macaque monkey known only as 96M1 died on July 8, 1999. He had a 2-year history chronic of weight loss & diarrhea.  Evidently 96M1 had been sick for a long time -- the post mortem diagnosis was chronic inflammatory bowel disease.

96M1 had been assigned to a laboratory in the neurosystems department at the University of Arizona, Neurosystems department to a Dr. Wilson.
