This Memorial Day, demonstrators in over 10 U.S. cities took to the streets to protest the use of animals in laboratories. Organized as a "National Day of Mourning," animal activists gathered to pay respects to the animals whose lives are lost in laboratories to outdated science.

In Seattle, over a dozen protesters showed up outside of one of the University of Washington's buildings where lab animals are kept.

"Advancements in computer modeling have made the use of animals in experiments obsolete. But many research labs are slow to phase out animals because they make too much money off of them," said Tiffany Young, a demonstrator at the Seattle protest.

"From Vioxx® to thalidomide, years of tragedies show how useless animal testing is for predicting how drugs will affect humans."

The Seattle demonstration was organized by NARN, the Northwest Animal Rights Network, and the nation-wide event was hosted by SAEN, Stop Animal Exploitation Now.
