Group claims Princeton labs mistreat animals

By Geoff Mulvihill, Associated Press, Thursday, September 30, 2011

MORRISVILLE, Pa. (AP) — An animal rights group has asked the federal government to investigate Princeton University's treatment of animals in the Ivy League school's research labs.

The complaint announced Thursday by Stop Animal Exploitation Now! focuses on monkeys used in neuroscience research. The group says a person who worked at Princeton supplied it with photos showing abuse.

U.S. Department of Agriculture spokesman David Sacks said the agency will send an inspector to the labs, which is usually done when a complaint is received.

Princeton said it will review procedures to ensure standards are being met, but noted the allegations date back years.

The USDA found six violations involving Princeton's treatment of monkeys earlier this year and 11 in 2010. In June, the university said it had taken steps to prevent problems from recurring.
