A protest outside the Cleveland Clinic - Activists say researchers are needlessly torturing animals

By WTAM.com, Saturday, April 21, 2012

(Cleveland) - A handful of protestors were outside the Cleveland Clinic today protesting experiments on animals. The demonstration was conducted at the Lerner Research Institute at East 100th Street and Carnegie Avenue.

Ellie Israel is with Stop Animal Exploitation Now, or SAEN. She says they're targeting the Clinic because of experiments on hundreds of animals. They're also targeting Ricerca, A Concord, Ohio biosciences lab for killing two animals in an experiment.

Isreal says by the Clinic's own records, 934 animals were experimented on in 2010, including 115 dogs, 351 hamsters, 177 rabbits, 240 pigs, 25 non-human primates, 17 sheep, and 9 bovine calves.

Isreal contends the actual number of animals experimented is much higher because mice and rats are not required to be reported.

The activist claims most the animals experimented on are tortured, but that the data is often flawed because test results for animals are different for humans and are not reliable.

Isreal believes there are better more accurate ways to conduct testing of products and potential medicines for humans, including computer & mathematical modeling, epidemiology, in-vitro research, genetic research, and post-marketing drug surveillance.
