Southborough Primate Center cited for improper animal handling

From MetroWestDailyNews.com, Thursday, April 3, 2014

SOUTHBOROUGH - Harvard's Primate Research Center has been cited by the U.S. Department of Agriculture following a complaint filed by an animal-rights activist group concerning allegations a marmoset's leg was fractured and a primate was incorrectly dosed.

Stop Animal Exploitation Now (SAEN) on Wednesday released information about the USDA's recent report on a 2012 incident at the research facility.

The USDA report cited the Primate Center for improper animal handling.

The two non-compliances were reported to the USDA by a SAEN complaint filed in January, based on records obtained from the National Institutes of Health's Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare.

The Harvard Medical School was previously fined over $24,000 for violations of the Animal Welfare Act, and last April announced the local research center would be largely shut down by 2015 due to changes in long-term strategic plans.
