National Primate
Liberation Week -- Nationwide Activism for Animals!!!
In August Stop Animal
Exploitation NOW! launched the first-ever National Primate Liberation Week
(NPLW). Local and national organizations participated in 15 NPLW events
across the U.S. Primate torturers from Seattle to Nashville and from Ann
Arbor (MI) to Houston felt pressure from activists to end the abuse of
animals in laboratories.
The first protest took place in Nashville (TN) targeting abusive
brain-mapping experiments at Vanderbilt. Activists came together for a
protest on August 23rd and received significant television
coverage.
Protests began in Michigan on Sunday, August 25th in Ann
Arbor. On Monday, August 26th, SAENs Executive Director,
Michael Budkie, announced the filing of an official complaint with the
USDA against the University of Michigan (UM) in an exciting news
conference. The target of the complaint was the drug addiction
experimentation of James Woods. This experimentation subjects rhesus
monkeys to cocaine addiction and withdrawal. Protests continued
throughout the week at the UM.
At the same time,
the Alliance for Animals (Madison, WI) kicked off their NPLW events by
releasing SAENs national report on primate experimentation, The
Primate Experimentation Scandal, to local media. This event was
covered by the Wisconsin Radio Network, which provides news to
radio stations throughout Wisconsin.
On Tuesday, August 27th SAEN Executive Director, Michael Budkie,
joined protesters in Chicago to oppose brain-mapping experiments at
Northwestern University. This event was covered by the Shadow News
Network, which provides news reports to radio stations in Chicago.
The Kalamazoo Animal Liberation League held a protest at the laboratories
of the Pharmacia Corporation on August 27th.
On Wednesday, August 28th a SAEN news conference in Madison
(WI) exposed abuses within the University of Wisconsin, Madison and the
Wisconsin National Primate Research Center. Both the Wisconsin Radio
Network and Wisconsin Public Radio covered this exciting
event.
On Thursday, August 29th Michael Budkie spoke to a group of
activists from Wisconsin and Illinois about the cruelty of primate
experiments and the horrors of the Wisconsin National Primate Research
Center.
Throughout the rest of National Primate Liberation Week protests and media
events took place in Boston, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Houston, Seattle,
Portland, Austin, and other cities. Return to Fall/Winter 2002 Issue Return to Newsletters |
