Everett, WA – A national Research watchdog organization, SAEN, is announcing today that it is releasing recently obtained government reports revealing multiple violations of federal law at the SNBL animal facility during 2005.

Recently obtained government reports outline incidents at SNBL where 20 marmosets died during a three-week period from emaciation. Other primates at this facility have died from the toxic side-effects of drugs in studies where experimenters claimed they would not even feel pain.

The same 5-page government report, which lists eight different violations of federal regulations, describes the last few days of primate #04139’s life. The primate was given a toxic chemical on 4/18/05 despite a previous 32% weight loss. After losing another 9% of his/her body weight, the animal was killed on 5/12/05.

The government reports list eight violations of regulations regarding veterinary care, housing, institutional animal care & use committee, and sanitation.

“The abuse and neglect which has taken place at SNBL is truly Criminal,” said Michael Budkie, A.H.T. SAEN’s Executive Director. “They should be punished to the fullest extent of the law.”

The SNBL incident is part of a growing pattern of neglect of primates and companion animals within laboratories. Recent government reports have revealed dogs losing from 24% - 37% of their weight at labs across the U.S. including: Harvard, the Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceutical Company (CT), Covance (PA), the Southern Research Institute (AL). Primates have died of dehydration or strangulation at facilities such as Harvard and Vanderbilt.
