Consumer health endangered by MPI Research, charges watchdog group after whistleblower goes public; USDA, FDA complaints filed

KALAMAZOO -- The safety of drugs sold to consumers is being questioned here after a whistleblower at MPI Research Laboratory in Mattawan disclosed the lab has manipulated testing results to allow drugs and other products to reach the market, according to a national research watchdog organization.

A major news conference to release the whistleblower statement about MPI will be held Monday, Oct. 15, at 10:15 a.m. at the Staybridge Suites Hotel (2001 Seneca Drive, Kalamazoo Room).

SAEN, an Ohio-based non-profit group that investigates research laboratory abuse, said a 2-page statement from an internal whistleblower; who will remain anonymous because of fear of reprisal; discloses conditions within MPI that endanger human health and violate federal animal protection legislation.

According to the whistleblower, MPI test results are falsified to allow potentially unsafe drugs and other products to reach the consumer market.

Illnesses in primates are ignored until they reach near death, so that chemical side-effects can be minimized in safety testing.

"MPI Research is endangering the safety of the American public as well as torturing animals needlessly," said Michael Budkie, A.H.T., SAEN's Executive Director. "This laboratory should be severely penalized by both the USDA and the FDA."

He said SAEN has filed official complaints against MPI with both the United States Department of Agriculture/Animal & Plant Inspection Service as well as the Food and Drug Administration.

The full text of the whistleblower's statement, along with the Official Complaints will be available at the news conference.
