Reports Reveal Painful Experiments at UM; Watchdog Group calls for end to abusive experiments
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Reports Reveal Painful Experiments at UM; Watchdog Group calls for
end to abusive experiments Minneapolis, MN Recently-obtained federal reports reveal that 232
animals were used in painful experiments at the University of Minnesota
without anesthesia during a recent reporting year. 24 dogs, 6 rabbits, 3 monkeys, and numerous species of wildlife
including squirrels, weasels, chipmunks, and bats experienced unrelieved
pain or distress in experiments conducted at the University of
Minnesota. The 232 UM animals used in experiments with unrelieved pain
constitute 73% of the animals experiencing unrelieved pain in
experimentation for the entire state of Minnesota. Dogs were used in experiments which injected painful substances
directly into the knee, rabbits develop toxic shock, and primates are
deprived of water and denied access to other members of their species.
Most of the wild animals were marked by chopping off sections of their
toes. Abusive experiments like those revealed in these government reports
should be ended immediately, said Michael A. Budkie, A.H.T., Executive
Director, SAEN. Federal funding should be directed towards clinical
research which is more relevant to modern medicine. In a letter to UM President Bruininks, Budkie states: There are some
things that simply should not happen. This category would include
depriving animals of water (a basic need), isolating social animals,
injecting painful compounds into the knees of dogs, chopping off the
toes of other animals these are all things that are inexcusable. The letter calls for an internal UM investigation into the non-use of
anesthesia in animal protocols, and evaluation and potential elimination
of relevant projects. Copies of relevant documents are available upon request. -30- See also: Return to
