SEATTLE, WA – Recently obtained federal reports reveal major violations of the Animal Welfare Act within the labs of the University of Washington, according to the national research watchdog group SAEN.

The September 17, 2009 inspection report cites the UW for an incident in which a primate was found dead of “malnutrition” after losing 25% of his/her body weight. The lab was cited for inadequate veterinary care.

The UW was cited by the USDA for violations in the areas of inadequate veterinary care, inadequate housing and enclosures.

“Negligence at the University of Washington took the life of this primate,” said Michael A. Budkie, A.H.T., Executive Director, SAEN. “This facility should face serious consequences, but the USDA is allowing them to literally get away with murder,” he said.

“If UW researchers can’t even make sure that the animals are fed adequately, then they should not be allowed to use animals. How can any of the research results from this facility be given any credence whatsoever,” said Budkie.

The USDA inspection reports are available upon request from SAEN.
