USDA cites Las Cruces Lab for Mass murder of Cats; Watchdog Group calls for Federal Fine

LAS CRUCES, NM – Federal reports reveal the gruesome deaths of ten cats at the Southwest Biolabs (Las Cruces, NM) and a National Research Watchdog Organization, SAEN is demanding a huge federal fine.

A recently obtained December, 2011, USDA inspection report reveals that a mechanical failure caused the temperature to rise so precipitously in a room which housed cats that ten of the animals died of heat prostration.

Stop Animal Exploitation NOW! (SAEN) is releasing the report to New Mexico news media and has called for a stiff fine for Southwest Biolabs.

“Negligence at this lab literally cooked ten cats to death,” said Michael A. Budkie, A.H.T., Executive Director, SAEN. “This facility should face the maximum penalty allowable under the law.”

SAEN has filed an official complaint with the USDA insisting on a full investigation of the incident and a severe fine.

The USDA report is available from SAEN.
