Group seeks $100,000 Federal Fine for OHSU, Federal Complaint targets
10 primate deaths
PORTLAND, OR – Sensitive federal records that reveal 10 shocking
primate deaths, and dozens of others injured or debilitated at the
Oregon Health and Sciences University are being made public by a
national research watchdog organization this week.
The Oregon Health and Sciences University lab should be heavily fined -
$100,000, said SAEN, a national research watchdog organization, which
uncovered the death & negligence, has filed a federal complaint with the
USDA, which oversees research laboratories.
SAEN said the records reveal that 6 primates died and 21 were injured in
fights caused by exposure to construction noise. 2 juvenile monkeys
died while being captured for health checks, another primate died of a
cervical fracture which occurred during transportation for treatment.
An additional primate died and 147 lost significant weight when the lab
used food which had been recalled.
SAEN has called for a USDA investigation, citations for multiple
incidents of improper animal handling, inadequate veterinary are, and
improper feeding. Collectively these infractions, if applied to
all animals, could result in a fine in excess of $100,000.
The USDA has previously fined the OHSU $11,679 for animal deaths.
“The Oregon Health and Science University has again demonstrated a clear
pattern of incompetence that has killed multiple primates animal and
potentially caused severe suffering to others," said Michael A. Budkie,
A.H.T., Executive Director, SAEN. "This incompetent lab deserves
the maximum penalty allowable under the law."
The USDA report and SAEN's Official Complaints are available upon
request from SAEN.
