Kalamazoo lab Negligence kills puppy & 135 rabbits; Watchdog Group calls for Six-Figure Fine
MATTAWAN/KALAMAZOO, MI – National Research Watchdog Group, SAEN (Stop
Animal Exploitation NOW) has filed an Official Complaint for the deaths
of 136 animals, as disclosed in controversial MPI Research
Internal MPI Research documents reveal an incident in which negligence caused a a spiral facture of the tibia of 12 week old beagle puppy, which resulted in killing the dog.
Additional MPI Research documents reveal the killing of 135 rabbits due to negligence. 134 were killed after veterinary negligence damaged the rabbits' eyes with improper needle insertion.
Additionally, MPI Research euthanized a rabbit following an incident
in which the animal's pelvis was fractured.
SAEN has filed an Official Complaint with the USDA alleging improper animal handling and use of unqualified personnel by MPI Research. The complaint calls for the maximum penalty of $10,000 per infraction. If levied out for each animal, this fine could exceed $130,000.
The bone fractures are part of ongoing animal handling violations at MPI. In February of 2013 MPI was fined $6,911 by the USDA, for multiple incidents which included 3 injuries caused by improper animal handling.
“The USDA must impose a more severe fine since MPI Research negligence has now killed another 136 animals,” said Michael A. Budkie, A.H.T., Executive Director, SAEN. “MPI Research is a repeat offender exhibiting multiple incidents of fatal negligence, they deserve the maximum penalty.”
Multiple labs have recently been cited for non-compliance with the Animal Welfare Act following SAEN complaints including University of Washington, Oregon Health Sciences University, University of Houston, Alpha Genesis (SC), University of California (Davis), and Wake Forest University.
All MPI correspondence is available upon request from SAEN.
