Dana Farber Institute Poisoned, Starved Animals, and Violated Federal Policies - Watchdog Group Calls for independent Probe

BOSTON, MA A cancer institute affiliated with Harvard University and already targeted for protests because of connections to a President Trump-owned resort is now the subject of scrutiny for animal abuse and breaking federal policies, said a research watchdog today.

SAEN (Stop Animal Exploitation NOW), which monitors U.S. research facilities for animal abuse and illegal activities, said it is asking Dana Farber Cancer Institute President, Dr. Lauria Glimche for an independent investigation of an "ongoing pattern of unchecked negligence and carelessness."

Dana Farber Cancer Institute correspondence obtained by SAEN document a multi-year pattern of non-compliances with federal policies records describe horrible animal deaths, including by ethanol poisoning, radiation, starvation and dehydration.

SAEN, after compiling the information from dozens of pages of documents detailing research non-compliance, has called for outside scrutiny of what it refers to as "situations of research negligence" at the cancer facility.

"If Dana Farber staff fails to provide food and water to animals, poisons them with ethanol, and abuses them in other ways, what does that say about the experimentation performed there," asked Michael A. Budkie, A.H.T., SAEN co-founder. "If they are incapable of performing basic animal husbandry, why should we believe that they can do science?"

In addition to calling for an independent investigation of animal abuse at the institute, SAEN insists that all individuals connected to any of the incidents of abuse be permanently barred from working with animals.

The negligence at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute at the Harvard affiliated facility is just the latest animal care scandal for the Boston-based University.

All reports and correspondence are available upon request from SAEN.
