Reports Letter to President Michael J. Garanzini of Loyola University Chicago
7/20/08 Michael J. Garanzini, S.J. President Garanzini, I am contacting you today regarding very disturbing information which
has recently come into my possession. This information is in the form of
reports from 3 consecutive inspections of Loyola laboratories by the
United States Department of Agriculture. These reports reveal 22
separate violations of the Animal Welfare Act within a period of less
than two years. I find this large accumulation of violations to be
outrageous. As a graduate of another Jesuit facility, Xavier University
in Cincinnati Ohio, I am deeply saddened and disappointed that Loyola
has such a clear disregard for animals and federal law. The nature of these violations is also very distressing. Inadequate
monitoring of several dogs after surgical procedures led to their
deaths. One rabbit died after a botched bone marrow procedure which
broke the rabbit’s leg, and took his/her life the next day. Other
rabbits died of serious bacterial infections which may also have been
the result of negligence. It is clear that a very serious situation exists at Loyola
University, and that this situation has already unnecessarily taken the
lives of a significant number of animals. It is clear that the research
conducted at Loyola is not effectively supervised. In fact, the
supervisory body, the Institutional Animal Care & Use Committee, is
itself responsible for 18 of the 22 violations. I believe it is necessary that the labs at Loyola be inspected by an
independent authority other than the USDA. Therefore I request that I be
given the opportunity to inspect all Loyola University laboratories and
that all local news media be allowed to accompany me on this tour. This
tour would give Loyola the opportunity to demonstrate an attitude of
openness and a willingness to rectify the major problems that clearly
exist. I will look forward to your response within five business days. Michael A. Budkie, A.H.T., See also :
