Tennessee group files complaint against Topeka Zoo

By Catherine Crane, KTKA News

The Topeka Zoo is once again under fire, but this time its from a watch dog organization in Tennessee.

Stop Animal Exploitation Now, or SAEN has filed a complaint with the USDA.

The complaint cited USDA Inspection reports from 2009 and 2010, in which most of the problems listed have already been corrected.

Although the complaint contained fact errors, the USDA still has to investigate.

Zoo Director Brendan Wiley says the USDA receives many complaints and he isn't worried about the complaint.

"You can disguise whether its the size of your group, the credentials of your group; its much more easy for people to just jump on the bandwagon so to speak without really having first hand knowledge," says Zoo Director Brendan Wiley.

The USDA says the problem with some watch dog organizations like SAEN is that there is no one watching them, thus the USDA investigates every complaint.
