Watchdog Group Wants Topeka Zoo License Suspended

The group, Stop Animal Exploitation Now! said the 12 animals that have died in Topeka since 2009 spurred them to write letters to the USDA and AZA accreditation committee.

A watchdog group is calling for the immediate suspension of the Topeka Zoo's USDA license and AZA accreditation.

The group, Stop Animal Exploitation Now! said the 12 animals that have died in Topeka since 2009 spurred them to write letters to the USDA and AZA accreditation committee.

SAEN says the requested suspension will close the zoo temporarily and allow regulators and zoo staff to correct the internal and external problems.

Topeka Zoo director, Brendan Wiley, said Tuesday that the group does not have the authority to make that call, but he will continue to be transparent to the public and the two agencies.

"Animal welfare groups play an important role in this country," Wiley said. "And, of course, have the right to say whatever they want to whoever wants to listen. But this in no way effects our course of action or changes anything we are working on."

Earlier this year, the USDA issued several citations after investigating the zoo for security problems.

Since the two break-in incidents, the zoo has been working with law enforcement to improve security.
