Primate experimentation in the United States is out of
control. Statistics based on data published by the United States
Department of Agriculture (USDA) reveal that
primate experimentation in the U.S. has reached an all
time high with over 120,000 of our closest relatives suffering and dying
in laboratories during the last two years.
Repetition is rampant among National Institutes of
Health (NIH) funded projects. There are currently 170 NIH projects that
study neural information processing in macaque monkeys. 75 separate
grants subject primates to cocaine. 70 different experiments study
vision in macaque monkeys. These experiments continue for decades
wasting millions of tax dollars, and victimizing primates for an entire
lifetime.
California Institute of Technology
Dr. Richard Andersen has tortured primates at
the California Institute of Technology (CIT)
since 1987. Coils are implanted near the primates
eyes and restraining devices and recording cylinders are attached to
their skulls.
Conditions at CIT are so terrible that an
anonymous complaint was filed with USDA, and inspection reports
have revealed terrible abuses. One primate (Cecil) had all the
experimental devices attached to his head, but CIT staff couldnt even
keep them clean and infection free.
UCLA
In Dr. Madeleine Schlag-Reys project at
University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) restraining devices are
bolted to the heads of rhesus monkeys. Coils are implanted near their
eyes and electrodes are placed into their brains. They are isolated in
restraint chairs for hours at a time.
Government inspections of UCLA labs have revealed
82 separate violations of the Animal Welfare Act.
Intelligent primates are chained in excrement filled cages:
" . . . non-human primates were tethered with rusted chains that
could drop into and be dragged through cage pans containing feces . . ."
One macaque monkey named Bao had a discharge (assumably
the result of an infection) coming from around an experimental device
(headset) which was affixed to its head. This animal had suffered with
intermittent infections for 1 1/2 years. (click

What you can do to help:
1. Read, copy, and distribute
this factsheet.
2. Write to your federal
legislators to request a General Accounting Office (GAO) investigation of
National Institutes of Health (NIH) funded primate experimentation.
