U.S. Army Medical Research, Frederick, MD

DOD Funding of Animal Cruelty 2005:
M4: Medical Biological Defense - 2

Title: Passive Protection Against Experimental Inhala Anthrax in the Nonhuman Primate Mode!.

Research Category: M4: Medical Biological Defense

FY: 2005 Funding (in dollars): $471,000

Responsible Organization: U.S. ARMY MEDICAL RESEARCH INSTITUTE OF INFECTIOUS DISEASES

Primary Contact: MRMC:
U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases
City: Fort Detrick
State: MD
Zip: 21702-5011

Keywords: LABORATORY ANIMALS ANTHRAX

Objective:
A) The first objective is to conduct the passive transfer of ?immune sera? into naive monkeys. Sera collected from previously rPA-vaccinated monkeys will be injected into naive monkeys and then an inhalation challenge of B. anthracis spores (Ames) spores will be administered. Vaccine immunogenicity and useful biomarkers will be identified.
B) The second objective is to quantify the amount of rPA antibody required to protect naive monkeys against a fixed aerosol challenge.

Approach:
Scientists at the USAMRIID have developed a new recombinant anthrax vaccine using purified protective antigen (rPA). Antibodies to protective antigen (PA), one of the toxins produced by Bacillus anthracis, have been shown to protect rabbits. In this protocol we will determine if antibodies to PA can also protect nonhuman primates. Sera containing high concentrations of antibody from nonhuman primates vaccinated with rPA will be given intraperitoneally to other nonhuman primates and then they will be challenged with Bacillus anthracis spores by aerosol.Leffel,F03-06

Rats, mice, birds, amphibians and other animals have been excluded from coverage by the Animal Welfare Act. Therefore research facility reports do not include these animals. As a result of this situation, a blank report, or one with few animals listed, does not mean that a facility has not performed experiments on non-reportable animals. A blank form does mean that the facility in question has not used covered animals (primates, dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, pigs, sheep, goats, etc.). Rats and mice alone are believed to comprise over 90% of the animals used in experimentation. Therefore the majority of animals used at research facilities are not even counted.
