Nevada lab under fire for monkey injuries

SPARKS, Nev. (AP) - An animal rights group is citing two monkeys whose fingers had to be amputated at a Nevada laboratory for seeking a bigger fine against the operators of the research facility.

The 20 violations in 2006 and early 2007 were reported by Wilmington-based Charles River Laboratories to federal officials.

The animal rights group, Stop Animal Exploitation Now, obtained the information through the Freedom of Information Act.

Charles River Labs is a clinical research organization which runs drug trials and operates studies that track drug side effects.

At the Charles River animal research lab in Sparks, Nevada, the fingers of 2 monkeys were caught in the wiring of their cages while being moved.

A company spokeswoman says the company immediately changed procedures to minimize the chance of a recurrence of the injuries.
