Animal Rights Group Claims Monkey Mistreatment At VCU

Posted: Oct 15, 2008 12:14 AM EDT

First it was the degree given to former Richmond Police Chief Rodney Monroe. Then it was that secretive research contract with tobacco giant Philip Morris. Now, an animal rights group is accusing VCU of mistreating monkeys. The Ohio-based group S.A.E.N or "Stop Animal Exploitation Now" wants the feds to investigate the deaths of two Rhesus monkeys. One of the animals was euthanized. The group also released a report detailing experiments in which monkeys at VCU become addicted to drugs, then are forced to undergo spontaneous withdrawal, experiencing pain. VCU sent us a statement, saying that the animal research program has been fully accredited by the association for assessment and accredidation of laboratory animal care for more than 40 years, and that they strictly comply with the animal welfare act and all federal standards for use and care of animals in testing, research and training.
