Protesters want MPI to liberate primates

Tuesday, October 20, 2009
Kalamazoo Gazette - Staff reports

MATTAWAN -- A small group of protesters demonstrated outside MPI Research in Mattawan on Monday as part of National Primate Liberation Week.

An Ohio-based animal-rights group, Stop Animal Exploitation Now, organized protests across the country for primate week, which runs through Saturday.

Mike Schuur, of Kalamazoo Animal Liberation League, stood outside the drug-testing company with fellow protesters whose signs read: ``Animals are not ours to experiment on.''

``Their entire business is based upon research on animals,'' said Schuur, a Kalamazoo resident, about MPI. ``A lot of people don't realize what this place does. We're out here just to bring attention.''

William Harrison, president and chief operating officer of MPI, said the animal-rights group has falsely accused MPI of treating animals badly in recent years.

Paul Morgan, MPI's general counsel, said Monday's protests were peaceful and the company respects people's freedom of speech.
