PRINCETON — Princeton University has been cited for not giving research primates enough water or adequate painkillers after surgery.

They were among 11 procedural violations found by the U.S. Department of Agriculture inspection conducted last month and obtained by The Times of Trenton.

Some animals also underwent multiple surgical procedures when research proposals indicated there would be only one.

The USDA gave the university high marks for the cleanliness of its labs and the general health of its research animals, which include 15 macaques, 10 marmosets, guinea pigs, rats, mice, and salamanders.

University spokeswoman Emily Aronson says most of the problems were due to record-keeping flaws and are already being fixed.
