Activists: Penn Has 115 Violations Since 2008

PHILADELPHIA - Animal rights activists say they're worried about the way animals are being treated at the University of Pennsylvania.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture sent an "official warning" to Penn for allegedly violating the Animal Welfare Act.

In a review conducted by the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, Penn racked up 115 violations since 2008.

Animal rights activists say that's unacceptable.

"This laboratory is breaking the law, wasting your tax dollars, and we think that money should be redirected into clinical research, which actually helps human beings now and allows us to gain medical information that is directly relevant to human medicine," animal rights activict Michael Budkie said.

Penn released a statement, saying: "Biomedical research at Penn is conducted in accordance with all federal laws, regulations and guidelines for the humane care and treatment of laboratory animals."

It goes on to say the majority of the issues cited refer to items such as rust on sinks or minor wall cracks.

"We take these and all reports of deficiencies very seriously and have modified our care programs to correct the deficiencies," the statement reads.
