U.A.F. Accused of Animal Cruelty
By Maggie Young, YourAlaskaLink.com, Friday, October 11, 2011
The University of Alaska may be penalized for animal cruelty.
Animal rights group, Stop Animal Exploitation Now is going after the University of Alaska, Fairbanks after 12 of their musk oxen in their animal research station starved to death.
Officials say that the U.A.F. staff was forbidden to contact the school's veterinarian when the oxen were malnourished.
The animal rights group found out about the the deaths after obtaining an inspection report from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
"These animals didn't have to die," says Michael Budkie, co founder of Stop Animal Exploitation Now.
"Anyone that has seen an animal that has become emaciated and has essentially
starved to death knows that they went through a very high level of pain and
suffering."
Although the case is still under investigation, the animal rights group hopes that the university suffers a severe penalty.
