Animal rights groups protest at Princeton
By Carmen Cusido, The Times, Trenton, December 10, 2011
PRINCETON BOROUGH — Representatives of animal rights organizations from New Jersey and Philadelphia were at the intersection of Nassau Street and Washington Road yesterday afternoon to protest alleged new information about animal deaths at Princeton University.
The protest began at 12:30 p.m. with four protesters, said police Lt. Robert Currier.
“They’ve been in town before. We’ve never had a problem with them and don’t expect any problem,” Currier said.
A previous animal rights protest drew nearly 20 people, Currier said.
In September, The Times reported that a whistleblower had leaked graphic photographs and an eyewitness account of alleged animal mistreatment and killings by Princeton’s Primate Neuroethology Laboratory.
In the latest statement, the group Stop Animal Exploitation Now, or SAEN, said several rats were allowed to starve to death within the last week due to research staff negligence. It is estimated that the rats may have gone for as much as a week without food before two of the animals starved to death, and the remaining animals for a specific study all had to be euthanized, SAEN said.
Princeton University spokesman Martin Mbugua has said the university takes reports of animal abuse seriously.
“We sustain commitment to strong oversight of animal research through an approach of continuous review of Princeton’s institutional animal care and use committee,” he said.
