Concord Township company Ricerca accused in animal deaths

By News-Herald staff, Monday, January 9, 2012

A drug research and development company based in Concord Township has come under scrutiny after an animal rights organization claimed the company is responsible for the negligent deaths of two animals.

According to the Milford, Ohio-based Stop Animal Exploitation Now, a monkey and a dog both died during separate experiments conducted at Ricerca Biosciences, LCC., headquartered at 7528 Auburn Road.

A SAEN news release indicates the information comes straight from federal reports filed by Ricerca.

The first incident involved a “test article” which was “inadvertently instilled into the lungs” of a primate. SAEN said this means the monkey literally drowned in toxic chemicals.

The second claim involves a dog — which had been used to test a drug — Ricerca employees found dead when they arrived at work one morning.

According to the news release, Ricerca should have noted the dog’s distress the previous evening.

SAEN has filed a complaint with the USDA and is “insisting on the maximum penalties allowable by law.”

Attempts to reach Ricerca officials for comment were unsuccessful.

According to news reports, a company spokesman said the USDA is already aware of both incidents and has cleared the company of any wrongdoing.

The company is, however, re-examining the deaths in light of the accusations, reports indicate.
