Animal Rights Group Asks For Yale To Be Fined

By Laura Reynolds,, Tuesday, April 1, 2014

New Haven, Conn. (WTNH) -  The animal rights group SAEN (Stop Animal Exploitation NOW), is calling on federal authorities to fine Yale University $330,000 for animals that died during medical research in Yale laboratories. That’s $10,000 for each of 33 animals that died.

The group says 15 hamsters, 17 mastomys, and 1 dog died.  Mastomys are a type of small rodent. The group says federal records filed by the school expose the deaths.

The group says some of the deaths are blamed on a vaccine given improperly, or malfunctioning equipment.

We called Yale University for a comment. Spokesperon Tom Conroy tells News 8 he is looking into the matter, and thinks the group got the information about the deaths from USDA records. Information on what research was being conducted on the animals was not released.
