Complaint accuses Yale in 33 animal deaths

From TimesUnion.com, Thursday, April 3, 2014

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) — An animal rights group is accusing Yale University of negligence in the deaths of 33 animals in research laboratories and wants federal officials to fine the school at least $60,000.

Stop Animal Exploitation NOW filed a complaint Monday with the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The Ohio-based group's executive director, Michael Budkie, told the New Haven Register that Yale isn't following basic animal treatment guidelines.

Yale spokesman Tom Conroy says the school properly self-reported the animal deaths and its programs meet or exceed federal standards.

Government documents show the lab incidents included a dog dying when an oxygen tank malfunctioned, 17 hamsters dying after a lab worker failed to perform a morning assessment of the animals and 15 mastomys, which are rodents, dying after being given an oral vaccine.
