Activists protest UW primate deaths

By Alison Morrow,, Thursday, July 13, 2014

SEATTLE - Activists with "Stop Animal Exploitation Now!" (SAEN) protested Thursday afternoon outside the University of Washington's National Primate Research Center.

The protest comes a day after the organization held a news conference about four euthanized primates.

SAEN obtained veterinary records through a public records request. The monkeys were used in brain and spine research. Surgical apparatus was placed on their brains and spines.

The research occurred in 2012 and 2013.

According to the postmortem paperwork, the primates suffered from severe bacterial infections, and some, from severe neurological problems.

One of the monkeys chewed his own hand bones to the second joint.

UW released a statement that the animals were humanely euthanized and were treated according to the standards of the Animal Welfare Act.

The USDA has inspected the university's laboratories and will release its findings soon. They report no active investigation at this moment.
