Feds warn OHSU over monkey care at research center

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Federal officials have warned Oregon Health & Science University that primates at a research center are receiving inadequate care.

The Oregonian reports Thursday the U.S. Department of Agriculture issued the warning last month after a federal inspection of the Oregon National Primate Research center following an outbreak of fighting last year that injured 15 rhesus macaques monkeys and left six dead.

The April inspection also found more than 50 percent of rhesus macaques were experiencing abnormal hair loss, suggesting physical or psychological causes. The report also found faulty operation of an anesthesia machine killed one monkey while it was undergoing imaging.

Stop Animal Exploitation Now, an animal rights group, says the research center should have been fined.
