Animal rights group says Washington University lab technician struck dog with closed fist

By GreenfieldReporter.com, Monday, October 6, 2014

ST. LOUIS — The federal government is investigating an allegation that a Washington University lab technician hit a dog with a closed fist.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch (http://bit.ly/ZPikAm ) reports the university self-reported the incident in 2012. The school said at the time that the lab technician's animal privileges were permanently withdrawn. The university said in the letter to the National Institutes of Health that it had determined the employee had beaten the dog.

The university says the technician was later fired.

The incident became public this week through public records requested by Stop Animal Exploitation Now, an Ohio-based animal welfare group. Director Michael Budkie says the organization has filed a complaint with the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Washington University said Monday it does not tolerate mistreatment of research animals and encourages employees to report such behavior.
