USDA Finds Five Violations At Texas Biomedical Research Institute

By Mark Reagn, SanAntonioCurrent.com, Wednesday, March 18, 2015

A routine United States Department of Agriculture inspection at the Texas Biomedical Research Institute uncovered opened bags of food, cockroaches and numerous bottles of outdated drugs.

The inspection occurred in early February and were obtained by Stop Animal Exploitation NOW! (SAEN), an advocacy group, that provided the San Antonio Current with the inspection report.

According to the report, Texas Biomedical Research Institute violated veterinary care, sanitation and supervision of experimentation standards.

Last September, another USDA report revealed that a young primate was killed when it was crushed to death by a cage door.

That primate is the fifth death in two years, according to USDA inspection reports from 2013 to 2014. The primates died from strangulation and another died from septicemia — or blood poisoning — that it contracted following traumatic injuries.

“Negligence at the Texas Biomedical Research Institute has now killed five monkeys through strangulation, trauma, and being crushed,” Michael A. Budkie, SAEN executive director, said in a press release. “This facility deserves the maximum penalty allowable under the law.”
