Group lodges new animal abuse complaint against UTMB
By Harvey Rice, Cron.com, December 2, 2016

GALVESTON – A group has lodged new allegations of animal abuse against the University of Texas Medical Branch and called for the firing of a vice president who oversees the care of those used for research purposes.

The group, Stop Animal Exploitation Now!, sent a letter Thursday to UTMB accusing researchers of boiling four mice alive during cage sterilization and allowing two dozen others to die without using euthanasia to prevent painful deaths.

The group has long complained about the treatment of animals at the medical school. Last year it filed a complaint with federal agencies that led to an investigation and a $33,000 settlement last month. The complaint accused researchers of allowing 12 monkeys to ensure painful deaths, in violation of the federal Animal Welfare Act.

The most recent letter accuses UTMB of continuing to abuse animals and blamed administrators for the problems.

UTMB issued a statement saying it "reported these incidents internally and externally in an appropriate and timely manner to the proper regulatory agencies.
