Animal rights group files complaint against OHSU over monkey deaths
From KATU.com, September 1, 2020
Stop Animal Exploitation Now, an animal rights group, filed a complaint
against Oregon Health and Science University over the accidental deaths of
two laboratory monkeys.
OHSU admitted that on August 13, two primates at its Hillsboro research
facility were unintentionally placed in a washing machine and boiled alive.
The university said this happened when a lab assistant was cleaning cages
and didn't realize one was occupied.
The lab assistant quickly realized their mistake after putting the cage in
the washer, but one monkey was already dead. The assistant called veterinary
staff for help, but a second monkey had to be humanely euthanized.
"The accidental death of any animal is deeply distressing and their passing
is grieved by all -- we deeply regret that this accident occurred,” OHSU
wrote in a statement Friday.
Stop Animal Exploitation Now filed the complaint with federal regulators and
is pushing for OHSU to face a hefty fine.
