Protest Over Funding for Animal Testing

By Jeff Brady

PORTLAND, OR 2002-04-26 (OPB News) - Animal rights activists demonstrated outside the Oregon Primate Research Friday to highlight the release of a report on how much the National Institutes of Health spends on animal experiments. Elaine Close of the Coalition to Abolish Animal Testing says the agency spends about $8 billion a year on 29,000 experiments. Close believes many researchers continue to perform experiments simply to justify continued funding.

Close: They don't have that much of an incentive to stop doing animal research when it brings in hundreds of millions of dollars.

Close says the NIH is funding 37% more experiments than it was ten years ago. A spokesman for the NIH said the agency could not comment on the report today.
