Deputy Administrator Helming,

allowed over forty monkeys to escape, endangering both the monkeys
themselves and local residents. This facility must be fully penalized -- a
fine of $12,722 per infraction/per animal.
Animal welfare group files federal complaint against facility that lost 43 monkeys in SC
From Anisa Snipes, November 8, 2024
An animal welfare organization said it is filing a federal complaint
after nearly four dozen primates escaped from a South Carolina research
center on Wednesday and have not yet been captured.
Police received a report at around 1 p.m. Wednesday that a group of Rhesus
Macaque monkeys escaped from their enclosures at the Alpha Genesis Research
Center. The facility is located in the small town of Yemassee in the
Lowcountry.
Now, the group, Stop Animal Exploitation Now, claims it will file a federal
complaint accusing the research center of carelessness.
The group also mentioned that this is not the first time this has happened.
Stop Animal Exploitation Now released the following statement:
“The clear carelessness which allowed these forty monkeys to escape
endangered not only the safety of the animals, but also put the residents of
South Carolina at risk.
It is important to note that Alpha Genesis was cited for primate escapes as
recently as 2022 (see Sec. 3.75 Housing Facilities, general violation in the
attached inspection report). Therefore, any violations issued against Alpha
Genesis for this monkey escape must be considered repeat violations.
Alpha Genesis must be fully investigated and prosecuted. Their violations
must be punished. A case must be opened with the Investigative and
Enforcement Services Division of the USDA.
At the conclusion of this investigation, the maximum penalty must be
assessed against Alpha Genesis — $12,722 per infraction, per animal. As you
know, since forty monkeys escaped, even a significantly reduced penalty
could reach six figures.”
Records show monkeys previously escaped from the facility as recently as
2022 and also in 2016.
