A look inside Santa Cruz Biotechnology
Santa Cruz Biotechnology (SCB) accumulated 27 violations of the
Animal Welfare Act during 2006 and 2007, making SCB one of the worst
laboratories in the nation. The SCB violations included inadequate
veterinary care, as well as infractions of unqualified personnel and
inadequate facilities.
Government inspection reports for SCB reveal multiple incidents of
abuse. One critically ill rabbit was observed by inspectors rolling on
the cage floor and hyperventilating.
Unqualified personnel at the lab treated seriously ill goats as lazy,
because they were unwilling or unable to move. Other goats at this facility
appear to be walking skeletons, with spine and hips protruding.
It is extremely unusual to have the opportunity to actually see the
animals that suffer inside facilities like SCB. However, SAEN recently
obtained photos from the USDA that illustrate the conditions of the
animals inside this horrendous facility.
These photos show a lame rabbit that is unable to use a rear leg and a
goat that is literally skin and bones. These pictures help to convey the
reality of the suffering that these innocent animals endure. More photos
from SCB are available on the SAEN website in the Picture Archive.
