Lab Watchdog Risks Arrest at San Diego Research Convention; Claims Attendees Guilty of Breaking Federal Law, Fraud

SAN DIEGO -- The director of a non-profit laboratory watchdog organization based in Ohio says he may have to risk arrest Monday to get out the word about major fraud and illegal acts inside secretive U.S. and California research laboratories.

Michael Budkie, A.H.T., executive director of SAEN, will hold a news conference at the Society for Neurosciences Convention at 10:15 a.m. MONDAY at the main entrance to the Convention Center (111 West Harbor Drive).

Budkie is expected to make public an in-depth White Paper on primate experimentation in the U.S. The probe chronicles major violations of federal law by the nation's research facilities in California and the San Diego area.

At a Sunday news event, Budkie was warned to stay off even the public areas at the Convention Center - although state law and recent federal court decisions clearly allow him to be there. A television cameraperson was also threatened and blocked from doing his job Sunday.

Budkie's investigations on the failures of the nation's research laboratories have resulted in government fines and other punishments for research facilities at Harvard, Yale, Columbia, Emory, University of California and scores of other universities.

SAEN has uncovered, using government documents and insider information, not only a waste of millions of tax dollars in redundant and unnecessary testing, but also revealed massive animal abuse - including some horrific deaths of primates - in those laboratories.
