Money to protect U.S. troops in Iraq wasted on unnecessary lab experiments at Wright Patterson Air Base, charges watchdog

DAYTON, OH Scarce federal dollars for U.S. troops in Iraq are being squandered in useless experiments across the country including here at Wright Patterson Air Base, according to a national research watchdog organization.

A protest and news conference to provide details will be held SUNDAY, April 20, at 12 Noon at the Wright Patterson AFB, Gate 1-C, RT 444.

More than $1.1 million at the air base which could be used to provide missing body armor for U.S. troops in Iraq is wasted on animal experiments that could be done more cheaply, according to the non-profit watchdog group SAEN, based in Ohio.

One medical expert said of the work at the base:

"(These experiments) are particularly unnecessary (they) may be performed using validated non-animal methods that are scientifically, educationally and ethically superior, if done at all."

Michael Budkie, executive director of SAEN, will host the news conference. He is conducting a tour of research facilities throughout six Midwest states this month.
