CHICAGO, IL – Recently obtained federal reports reveal mounting
violations of the Animal Welfare Act within the labs of Loyola
University, according to the national research watchdog group SAEN.
The 22 violations amassed by Loyola during three inspections include
inadequate veterinary care, repeat violations by the Institutional
Animal Care & Use Committee, unqualified personnel, and the filing
of potentially fraudulent reports with regulatory agencies.
Negligence took the lives of several dogs due to non-existent post
surgical care. Rabbits died of infections or from botched
experimental procedures, said SAEN.
“The negligence at Loyola had been fatal to five dogs and 7 rabbits,
and others suffered without veterinary care” said Michael A. Budkie,
A.H.T., Executive Director, SAEN. “This facility must face serious
consequences,” he said.
One experiment involving dogs had a 44 percent mortality rate.
Reporting errors included inaccurate reporting of experiments
involving dogs. The Animal Welfare Act violations occurred during
three consecutive inspections from March of 2006 - November 2007.
The Loyola Animal Care and Use Committee racked up 18 infractions.
One of the violations was fraudulent reporting and two other related
to inadequate veterinary care.
“If a medical school can’t adequately supervise experiments
involving dogs and rabbits then those projects should be immediately
terminated,” said Budkie, who has contacted Loyola University Pres.
Michael J. Garanzini, to demand an immediate inspection tour of all
Loyola research facilities.
The USDA inspection reports are available upon request from SAEN.
