Watchdog Group Files Official Complaint Against University of Rochester; Demands Fine for Intentional Monkey Starvation
Rochester, NY – As recounted in today’s Rochester Democrat and Chronicle article, it has come to light that a University of Rochester Researcher INTENTIONALLY starved two monkeys, in direct violation of the Animal Welfare Act, a federal law.
SAEN, a national research watchdog organization, has filed an official complaint against the University of Rochester insisting on additional citations for violations of no less than four sections of the Animal Welfare Act.
SAEN has also requested investigations of the work of three UR researchers (Shawn Newlands, Lizabeth Romanski, and Gregory Deangelis) whose experimentation involves food or water deprivation, use of primate restraint chairs, and use of mechanical devices which are surgically attached to the skulls of the animals (representative photos are available).
Due to the intentional and pre-meditated nature of the existing Animal Welfare Act violations by University of Rochester staff, SAEN has also requested the institution of proceedings to issue a fine against UR by USDA/APHIS/AC.
Michael A. Budkie, A.H.T., Executive Director, SAEN, states in a letter to Dr. Elizabeth Goldentyre (Director of the Eastern Regional Office of the USDA): “The treatment of animals at this facility illustrates attitudes of carelessness, negligence, and willful misconduct that must be punished so that meaningful changes can be made. Therefore, I also insist that you take the most severe action allowable under the Animal Welfare Act and immediately begin the process of issuing a fine against the University of Rochester.”
A recently obtained USDA inspection report reveals a major violation of the Animal Welfare Act at the University of Rochester including depriving two separate primates of water for 2 and 4 days respectively.
