USDA cites Michigan lab for 4 fatalities; Watchdog Group Calls for ‘Major Fine’

BATTLE CREEK/KALAMAZOO, MI – Federal reports reveal that the MPI research facility has been cited by the USDA for major violations of the Animal Welfare Act which were unearthed by national research watchdog group Stop Animal Exploitation NOW (SAEN).

An August 3, 2011, USDA report reveals that improper animal handling at MPI caused severe traumatic injuries to four animals. The injuries to these animals were so severe that no treatment was possible, requiring euthanasia.

A USDA spokesperson has confirmed that the animals killed by MPI negligence were 2 primates, 1 dog and 1 pig. This same source has also confirmed that the August 3 citation was the result of a complaint filed by SAEN in late 2010.

“This lab killed four animals through sheer negligence,” said Michael A. Budkie, A.H.T., Executive Director, SAEN. “This kind of incompetence should be given the maximum penalty allowable by law. It is good to see that the USDA is taking complaints seriously.”

SAEN has contacted the Western Regional Office of USDA/APHIS/AC as well as the Office of the Inspector General to insist on a federal fine.

The USDA inspection reports are available upon request from SAEN.
