Three Kittens Killed at NY Animal Breeder/Lab Previously fined in Suffocation Deaths of Two Dogs; Watchdog Group Calls for License Termination

BINGHAMTON/ELMIRA, NY– Three kittens were killed because of gross negligence at Liberty Research of Waverly, NY, reported a non-governmental watchdog group which found the information in government records.

Previously, Liberty Research was fine $5,250 by the U.S. Department of Agriculture for suffocating two dogs following an "Official Complaint" filed by SAEN, a watchdog group based in Ohio that monitors the nation's research facilities for wrongdoing.

SAEN said it has now filed another Official Complaint – which can lead to fines and other penalties – against Liberty Research, seeking a federal fine and the termination of Liberty's license as an animal breeder.

The canine suffocation deaths at Liberty Research occurred in 2014 and garnered the federal penalty. In 2015, Liberty violated the Animal Welfare Act seven times. The fatal incident involving the kittens took place in 2016.

"Liberty Research's negligence led directly to the deaths of two dogs and three cats," said Michael A. Budkie, A.H.T., SAEN executive director. "This animal breeder/laboratory deserves to be closed down."

The most recent inspection, said SAEN, discloses that Liberty imprisons 2,878 cats, dogs, puppies and kittens. " The safety of these animals is in danger as long as this negligent facility is in operation," noted Budkie

All USDA reports and SAEN's Official Complaint are available upon request.
