Rare Graphic Photos Accentuate Animal Suffering at Seattle-Area Lab (SNBL); Watchdog Group Calls for Closure Following Guinea Pig Injuries and Monkey Deaths

SEATTLE/EVERETT, WA – New documents unearthed by a national watchdog
group reveal more negligent research subject injuries and deaths – including
at least four primates – at the embattled Shin Nippon Biomedical
Laboratories (SNBL) research facility here.
SAEN, an Ohio-based nonprofit that monitors U.S. research facilities for
illegal activity including animal cruelty, is calling for a fine of more
than $1 million and facility closure in new official complaint with the U.S.
Dept of Agriculture.
SAEN points out all of these reports follow the payment of a landmark
$185,000 federal fine in December of 2016 for Animal Welfare Act violations
from December 26, 2011 through May 4, 2016.
SAEN said recently obtained photos (available upon request) reveal the
suffering of animals with open wounds. Records disclose multiple new animal
deaths, including at least four more primate deaths.
SAEN is calling for the maximum federal penalty of $10,000 per
infraction/per animal, and also demanded the permanent termination of SNBL's
license as an animal dealer and surrender of SNBL's registration as a
research facility.
"After seeing photos of animals with significant injuries who were denied
even the minimal treatment of pain relief, it is now clear that SNBL is a
heartless company hell bent on abusing animals," said Michael A. Budkie,
A.H.T., SAEN executive director. "The only way to end the illegal actions of
SNBL is to close the facility permanently."
