Arizona State University Mistreated Research Subjects, Broke Federal Law – Humans Injured, Claims National Watchdog

TEMPE, AZ – Arizona State University mistreated research subjects in violation of federal law, and negligent acts led to injuries to humans, according to a national research watchdog group.

SAEN, a nongovernmental nonprofit watchdog group that monitors the nation’s research facilities, said it obtained government reports that document that the university didn’t provide water to primate subjects. In another citation, chinchillas were not given required veterinary care.

In another two incidents, unapproved personnel working with dogs were bitten, according to reports.

SAEN said it has filed an “official complaint” with the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture against Arizona State University for multiple failures to comply with the Animal Welfare Act.

In a letter to the USDA regional office in Ft. Collins, CO, SAEN co-founder and executive director Michael Budkie, AHT, commented:

“I know that your office considers major violations of the Animal Welfare Act to be very serious in nature, especially when these violations kill or seriously injure animals. I must insist that you take the most severe action allowable under the Animal Welfare Act and immediately begin the process of issuing the maximum fine allowable against the Arizona State University at the completion of your investigation of their research facility -- $10,000 per infraction.”
