Watchdog Group Monday to Call For End to Multi-Million Dollar Michigan Research Project

ANN ARBOR A government watchdog group has filed an official complaint with the USDA calling for the immediate end to a multi-million dollar University of Michigan research project because it violates federal law.

Details of the complaint will be disclosed at a news conference MONDAY, August 26, at 10 a.m. (Corner of Glenn & Catherine Streets). The author of the complaint will be present at the news briefing.

In a report "The Primate Experimentation Scandal" issued last week, SAEN charges U.S. primate research facilities like those at the University of Michigan are spending billions of tax dollars not on cancer and other life-threatening diseases, but on sex experiments, and drug and alcohol addiction.

Cincinnati-based SAEN insists U. of Michigan researcher James Woods has violated federal law by spending millions of dollars over more than 30 years on primate research into drug addiction that is "unnecessarily duplicative" and not really relevant to human health.

SAEN said government audits reveal nearly $700 million is spent annually on primate experiments but that most of it does not involve research into diseases that kill most Americans, such as cancer and heart disease. Instead, the majority of research funds are used for experiments in cocaine and alcohol consumption, reproduction and esoteric areas like "brain mapping."

"The American public has been hoodwinked by a pseudo-scientific establishment whose primary objective is self-perpetuation. More than a half billion dollars is spent every year in the U.S. on experimentation of questionable value which is not designed to cure real diseases," said SAEN.
