DOD Funding of Animal Cruelty 2005:
N1: Physical Protection - 5

Title: Ocular Protection Provided by the USAF Direct View Goggle: Retinal Exposures in the Rhesus Monkey

Research Category:

FY: 2005 Funding (in dollars): $395,000

Responsible Organization: AIR FORCE RESEARCH LAB/BROOKS
Primary Contact: US Army Medical Research Detachment of the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research
City: Brooks City-Base
State: TX
Zip: 78235-5116

Keywords: LABORATORY ANIMALS LASER BIOEFFECTS OPTICAL LIMITER OCULAR INJURY

Objective: Optical limiters are capable of protecting against pulsed laser sources without seriously degrading visual performance. The USAF has conducted laboratory and field performance testing on a prototype optical sight with an optical limiter designated the Direct View Goggle (DVG). The laser energy transmitted to the eye is less than that typically required to damage the eye. The objective of this work is to measure the laser protection provided by the DVG device in monkey trials with pulsed laser radiation. These animal-use trials are critical for Air Force acceptance and advanced development of the DVG device.

Approach: This study will produce dose-response data for the production of laser-induced macular and paramacular retinal damage in rhesus monkeys protected by the DVG device. Six anesthetized monkeys fitted with the DVG device will receive 15 exposures in each eye to single pulses of 532 nm, Q-switched, laser energy. The on-axis, incident laser beam will be expanded and collimated to overfill the DVG input objective. The incident energy will be the experimental variable for determining the minimum visible lesion threshold and will be varied from ~1 ?YJ to a maximum of 10 mJ. The incident energy will be recorded for each exposure. The presence or absence of retinal alteration at each exposure site will be determined via ophthalmoscopic examination at one hour post exposure and at 24 hours post exposure and correlated to the dose at that site.

Rats, mice, birds, amphibians and other animals have been excluded from coverage by the Animal Welfare Act. Therefore research facility reports do not include these animals. As a result of this situation, a blank report, or one with few animals listed, does not mean that a facility has not performed experiments on non-reportable animals. A blank form does mean that the facility in question has not used covered animals (primates, dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, pigs, sheep, goats, etc.). Rats and mice alone are believed to comprise over 90% of the animals used in experimentation. Therefore the majority of animals used at research facilities are not even counted.
