DAMAGE PARKINSON'S DISEASE |
Objective: |
The goal of this study is to use an animal model to
determine whether exposure to microwave radiation similar to that used
in military environments affects the nigrostriatal dopaminergic
pathway and whether the exposure increases the risk of Parkinson's
disease. |
Approach: |
The study investigates effects of microwave exposure on
the nigrostriatal system using rotenone in Lewis rats as a model.
Animals were implanted with osmotic pumps to provide chronic infusion
of rotenone at different doses and durations to identify appropriate
dosing parameters for use with later exposures to pulsed L band
microwaves at whole-body specific absorption rate of 0, 0.4, or 4 W/kg
in daily 6 min exposures. Forelimb use and locomotor activity were
tested weekly to assess nigrostriatal function over 3 weeks. Changes
in brain neurochemistry were assessed at 3 weeks through measurement
of tyrosine hydroxylase and OX-42 by immunohistochemistry. This work
supports the USAMRMC Neurotoxin Exposure Treatment Research Program (NETRP),
which recognizes that military occupational exposures have the
potential to increase the risk of neuronal injury. This work assists
in establishing the biomedical and physiological database required to
assess US Army hazards as required by Army Regulation 40-10.

Rats, mice, birds, amphibians and other animals have
been excluded from coverage by the Animal Welfare Act. Therefore research
facility reports do not include these animals. As a result of this
situation, a blank report, or one with few animals listed, does not mean
that a facility has not performed experiments on non-reportable animals. A
blank form does mean that the facility in question has not used covered
animals (primates, dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, pigs,
sheep, goats, etc.). Rats and mice alone are believed to comprise over 90%
of the animals used in experimentation. Therefore the majority of animals
used at research facilities are not even counted.
