Letter to USDA Exposing Serious AWA Violations at MPI Facility
10/12/07
Dr. Elizabeth Goldentyer Dr. Goldentyer, I am contacting you regarding a matter of the utmost urgency and importance. I have recently been contacted by a whistleblower who has given me very disturbing information regarding the MPI Research (registration number 34-R-0031) facility in Mattawan, MI. I have been contacted by a whistleblower who, as an employee, has extensive familiarity with the internal functioning of MPI Research. I have included a transcript of the information that was relayed to me so that you can learn about the extensive violations of the Animal Welfare Act that have taken place within this facility. Some of the violations revealed by the whistleblower include inadequate veterinary care and inadequate observation of the animals. Other issues at this facility include potentially inadequate environmental enhancement for primates, improper handling of primates, and potential retaliation against whistleblowers who have reported. The sections of the Animal Welfare Act which we believe MPI has violated include, but are not limited to, Sec. 2.33 which requires adequate daily observation of animals and the administration of appropriate veterinary care, Sec. 2.36 regarding reporting requirements, Section 3.81 requiring Environmental Enhancement for primates, and Sec. 2.131 requiring proper handling of animals to not cause trauma, stress, or discomfort. The situations revealed by this whistleblower are extremely serious and could potentially endanger not only the health and welfare of the animals within this facility, but also the safety of the American public. Therefore, I am filing an official complaint against MPI Research and asking that USDA/APHIS/REAC immediately investigate this facility to examine the health and welfare of all primates at this facility as well as the reporting of this facility regarding the us of animals in experiments that can potentially cause pain or distress. I would also request that you provide me with the results of this investigation when it is completed. Sincerely,
Michael A. Budkie, A.H.T., For more information about MPI Research, see: Return to USDA Complaints |
